Novell Client fix for Locking Workstation
Written By: Jonathan Robbins | Authors Website: Visit | Views: 573 | Print Tweak | 2/20/2002
If you have ever tried to lock the workstation in 2000 or XP Pro, you may have noticed that when you lock the computer, it doesn't go to the box that states that the computer is locked by the user. It simply skips to the unlock window. This can cause problems with the screen saver and cause it to crash possibly giving the chance of screen burn-in over a long period of time. To combat this there is a registry fix available. This involves creating a file which can be called WorkstationFix.reg to do this for you. Here are the steps:
1. Open your favorite text editor(Notepad, etc...)
2. Type the following lines:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"DisableCAD"=dword:00000000
3. Save the file as WorkstationFix.reg. (Make sure the "As type" box is not set to "Text Files" if you are using Notepad)
4. Right-click on the file you just saved and click Merge.
5. Click the OK button once the message box opens.
You should now be able to lock the workstation with no problem. You don't even have to restart the machine.

Morpheus Max Search Results Tweak

After seeing the tweak by Liam Deacon for increasing the maximum search results in Kazaa, I decided to try it for Morpheus. It works, but the value must be added manually. All you need to do is:
1. Run regedit.
2. Goto: HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Morpheus/Advanced
3. Create DWORD value "MaxSearchResult"
4. To enter the data, double-click on the new value, switch to decimal input, and enter the number of results you want. I set mine to 400 per Liam's suggestion.
Now you will get a lot more search results than the program's "maximum" of 100. Thanks to Liam for the original tweak.

Tweak-XP Ad Blocker mod

Ok this is very simple.
The ad blocker in Tweak-XP shows a horrible streched GIF image when ever it blocks an ad. It may stop the ad from downloading from the server but spoils the website your looking at!.
1)If you make a GIF file 168 x 45 dont do anything to it (Leave it blank), just set the background to transparent. (the idea is to have nothing showing at all)
2)Save it as AdBlock and as a GIF file
3)Now go into the Tweak-XP folder (C:\Program Files\Tweak-XP) find the origional AdBlock.GIF and rename it (AdBlockOLD for example)
4)Now cut and past your new transparent AdBlock.GIF file. Place it in the tweak-XP folder. (C:\Program Files\Tweak-XP)
Now instead of a horrible streched gif file you see nothing at all.

I was looking at the files in the Direct Connect folder and was wondering how to make other people see that I am sharing more files and in reality I am not sharing any.
These are the steps to cheat:
1. share like 20 GB (if you have that much).
2. enter the room
3. change the folder name that you are sharing.
Thats it, its going to show that you are sharing 20 GB but you are sharing none.

Mouse acceleration tweak

Hi,
Today I Found a tweak from "yiNXs" (who should get all the credit) wich actually resolves the "xp mouse acceleration bug". Most people who play games like quake3 and counterstrike know what I mean. There were some workarounds, but they never satisfied me.
If you don't believe it; try it yourself!
Here is the tweak:
Background (yiNXs)
The tweak was found by finding a logic order in the 64-bit hexa-decimal values at the below regestry-entries. When trying different values, you should come up with a diagram wich displays a curve, this is the unwanted acceleration. Adjusting the values that the curve becomes a straight line rosolves the mouse-acceleration.
1. Safe the following text to a .reg file and doubleclick it:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Mouse]
"SmoothMouseXCurve"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,a0,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,40,\

Uninstall "Hidden" Windows coponents

Apparently Microsoft didn't want you to be able to remove useless garbage like Windows Messenger. It's installed by default, and it doesn't appear in the Add/Remove Program applet in controlpanel.
Thankfully, you can force the issue by editing the SYSOC.INF file, located in C:\Windows [or your Windows Directory]\inf folder. Open it in Notepad.
Under the [Components] heading, you'll see a whole bunch off parameters for various Windows applets. Some off them contain the word "Hide". Those particular programs, which include Windows Messenger (msmsgs), Terminal Server, PinBall, and others, are installed on your XP system, but their intries are hidden from Add/Remove Dialog.
To remove Windows Messenger, edit Hide out of the line that reads:
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7
So that it looks like this:
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,7
Save the file, close it and open Add/Remove Program Applet. Click on Windows Components button and you'll see Windows Messenger listed. Unchech it and click Next to purge that Silly program from your system.

In [HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Command Processor], set "CompletionChar"=dword:00000009
to the ASCII value of whatever key you want. Adding this key also allows tab completion in Win2000.

ICQ startup problem (no connection)- SOLUTION!!
Written By: RenegadeX | Authors Website: Visit | Views: 4841 | Print Tweak | 1/6/2002
It seems lots of people are having problems with ICQ and WinXP not finding a network/internet connection upon XP startup (especially those on DSL modems like myself, or those with LAN/T1's, etc.)
The Problem is that when XP loads, ICQ pops up and says "no connection detected". This occurs despite the fact that 'Net Detect Agent' and 'automatically connect to internet when no connection present' are checked. The previous solution was to move Net Detect Agent *out* of the Startup folder, put a shortcut on the Desktop, and use that when you wanted to connect.
I was browsing through the boards here and came across a thread discussing this problem: http://www.tweakxp.com/tweakxp/board/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=245
They did not come across a solution, however it did give me an idea..
I tried it .. and it WORKS!! Read on...
Here's how to do it (am using WinXP Pro):
1. Go to the Group Policy Editor (Run->"gpedit.msc")
2. Under 'User Configuration', click "Administartive Templates"
3. Click 'System'-> 'Logon'
4. In the window on the right, double-click on "Run these programs at user logon"
5. Make sure 'Enabled' is checked, then click 'Show'
6. You'll now want to add ICQ's Net Agent Detect to the list (which is probably empty unless you've already been in here). To do this, first locate on your HD the exact location of 'NDetect.exe'.
Example: C:\Internet\ICQ\NDetect.exe
Click 'Add', then type the filename & path of the above file
7. Click 'OK', 'OK', and 'OK' again to exit.
The next few steps are important:
8. Now make sure that there are NO traces of ICQ or Net Detect Agent in your Programs->Startup folder. If there are, delete them from Startup.
9. Start up ICQ, and go to 'Connections'(Main->Preferences->Connections->General tab). Under 'Launch' make sure 'Launch ICQ at startup' is NOT checked.
10. Click 'OK'. Disconnect from Internet if connected.
REBOOT.
If everything goes properly, you should now see the Net Detect Agent appear in the system tray as WinXP starts up the desktop. When you connect to the Net, it magically disappears.. to be replaced with the ICQ 'flower' which will shortly find a connection and voila! Problem solved!

Compatibility mode for shortcuts that directly point to files on CDROM drive
Written By: NealBScott@Yahoo.com | Authors Website: Visit | Views: 2336 | Print Tweak | 12/31/2001
Summary:
I was installing a kid's game that needs to run in XP's 256 color and 640x480 res, but the shortcut the install program made didn't have the 'compatibility' tab. I noticed that the shortcut was pointed directly to a program on the CD in the drive.
Steps:
-Turns out that the 'properties' tab of a CD shortcut is not there unless the CD drive is empty.
-So I empty the CD drive
-open the properties of the shortcut
-put the CD back in,
-then fiddle with compatibility modes.
-test.
Works like a charm.

Lagging Mouse Within Games
Written By: C}{$ | Authors Website: Visit | Views: 8130 | Print Tweak | 12/30/2001
Microsoft, the kind people that they are, want you to use their own DirectX API and especially Direct Input. They know that everyone hates them, so they are going to force it on you. So, what the crafty fuckers have done, is made your mouse more processor dependant, and took out the acceleration options from the mouse CPL. Within Direct Input, it gets CPU priority and it doesn't have the acceleration on by default. Since most older games use the older more standard method of tracing mouse movements, they get it from the default Windows mouse interrupt handler. Now, if too much of you processor is elsewhere, your mouse is gonna seem less responsive. So.... here is the fix.
Download the latest intellipoint drivers, install them, then, when the point32.exe (the main exe for your mouse I think), is running, we need to give this CPU priority over Half-Life. To do this, right click the task bar, click Task Manager, click the processes tab, look for point32.exe, right click that, click set priority, and click High. Do this for type32.exe if you have an M$ keyboard. I have both, and I discovered the fix whilst tinkering today
You will also have to add this to the command line of your HL.
-noforcemparms -noforcemaccel
This should clear up any of the issues.
For Quake 3:

To stop messenger from loading when visiting sited such as hotmail delete the following key. But remember to backup your registry before doing anything to it. This works in Windows 2000 also.
1. Start > run > type regedit
2. Navigate to the following key
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{F3A614DC-ABE0-11d2-A441-00C04F795683}\LocalServer32]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\Messenger\\msmsgs.exe\""
3. This can be done easily by searching for F3A614DC in the registry and it will automatically take you there.
4. Delete this key and you will see that messenger does not load anymore when visiting hotmail. Happy tweaking.

RTC Wolfenstein slow map loads
Written By: Daedalus | Authors Website: Visit | Views: 9914 | Print Tweak | 12/19/2001
I ran into this problem in both WindowsME and XP. While in multiplayer mode in Return to Castle Wolfenstein, I would get excessive page file activity which would get progressively worse. Map load times would constantly increase as each new map was loaded until the system reported WOLF.exe had caused and error and would shutdown the game.
The solution for my system is to set both the Desktop AND game color to 16-bit. Also, set both to the same resolution. I like 1280 x 1024, but that may be too high for some systems.
After this tweak, my map load times went from >1 min to between 10 and 20 seconds. Right where a P4 1.5 with 256 megs should be.

When you load up Nero, it may be slow "Scaning SCSI/IDE-Bus Pleast Wait..." Because XP also uses the CD-RW Drive. If you do not use the built-in CD Recording feature, disable it, so Nero can load up faster.
1. Open Control Panel
2. Administrative Tools
3. Services
4. Look for "IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service" under name (I suggest clicking on the "Name" bar to organize it in chronological order first)
5. Right click, go to Properties
6. In the "Startup Type:", select Disabled
7. Apply and close, no need for reboot, close Nero if needed, and reopen. You should see a difference in the time Nero loads from start to finish compare to how long before this tweak.

If you install Nero 5.5.5.1 on an XP machine that has MusicMatch Jukebox (MMJB) 6.X installed, you will experience the "lost CDROM drives" syndrome. This is apparently caused by conflicting CD burning drivers in Nero and MMJB. Uninstalling MMJB 6.X solves the problem with the lost drives and allows you to use Nero. Once MMJB 6.X is uninstalled, you can then install MMJB version 7.0, and you will have full functionality in both Nero and MusicMatch Jukebox.

According to Microsoft, Windows 2000 does not qualify for an upgrade to the XP Home Edition. Windows 2000 Professional users can only upgrade to XP Professional. If the XP upgrade disk is run from inside Windows 2000, the software will report that no qualifying operating system is seen, and therefore the XP upgrade cannot be used. However, if the computer is set to boot from the XP CDROM, the install program will indicate that it sees no qualifying program for the upgrade, and asks the user to insert the install disk for 1 of several qualfying operating systems to verify ownership. Windows 2000 Professional is a qualifying system on the list, in spite of Microsoft statements that it can only be upgraded to Windows XP Professional. To upgrade from Windows 2000 to XP Home Edition, boot from the XP CDROM (by changing BIOS settings), and when asked insert your Windows 2000 install CDROM to prove ownership of an operating system eligible for an upgrade. The XP install can then proceed on any available free hard drive space. If the free space is on a hard drive already containing Windows 2000 (space created for example by programs such as Partition Magic), the XP install will automatically set up a dual-boot system. This asks you each time you turn the computer on which OS you want. This allows people to retain Windows 2000, while migrating applications and data piece by piece to Windows XP.

I like to keep Outlook open all the time, but I don't like to have it on the taskbar all the time.
To minimize it to the system tray, start regedit and follow the steps below:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Office \ 10.0 \ Outlook \ Preferences
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Name: MinToTray
Data: 1 (0 to disable MinToTray)

There is certain compatability issues with nero.
If nero and cdrwin are on the same pc you cd rom drives will become invisible.
To get round this copy the WNASPI32.DLL from the nero folder to the cdr win folder and open up cdr win and in the settings select this as your aspi driver, then reboot.

Since Windows XP doesn't include ATAPI Drivers for CD Ripping through AudioCatalyst etc your forced to rip using the audio output rip. Terrible! All you need to do to enable ATAPI Ripping is download and install ForceASPI from this address:
http://www.mindspring.com/~tburke1/aspi.htm
Once installed, ripping at high ATAPI speeds is back to normal! :)

Increase speed of Outlook Express when Messenger is removed or disabled
Written By: FreeMan | Authors Website: Visit | Views: 44206 | Print Tweak | 9/25/2001
For some users when they remove windows messenger or just disable it from starting up automatically they experience a great slow down when launching Outlook express. Users who experience such a slow down will find a error in the system error log saying The server {FB7199AB-79BF-11D2-8D94-0000F875C541} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout. The solution this problem is quite simple. Just Open up regedit and search for the string {FB7199AB-79BF-11D2-8D94-0000F875C541} and modify the keys InProc32 and LocalServer32 default key to a empty string. After a reboot, Outlook will start up as fast as possible.
